Hulme, Holm (13th century) and Holme (Modern).

Holme, one of the Fenland villages, has lost a lake, which became good plough-land nearly 200 years ago, but it still has Holme Wood, all that is left of its old forest. It was in Denton Fen close by that an Iron Post was driven through 22 feet of peat to the underlying clay in 1852. When examined in 1932 it was found that the peat had shrunk 10 feet, showing that the fens were losing their rich mould and sinking a foot about every 10 years.

There is a fragment of an ancient cross by the road, a 17th century cottage with beautiful Dutch gables, a group of thatched cottages and a church only a lifetime old, though it altar table is four centuries older and its arcades go back to the Normans.

Holme is one of the parishes of the District of Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is Huntingdon, the other principle towns being St Ives home of the Chapel on the Bridge, St Neots the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of Godmanchester and Ramsey site of the former Abbey.
